Given that the first paralegals recognized by the US Supreme Court were "jailhouse lawyers," it would be ironic if a past felony conviction were to prevent one from working in the field. However, lack of punctuation and capitalization never looks good in written communication. This might be a good place to practice those skills. |

| Having a felony on your record shouldn't stop you from becoming a paralegal but having a felony, period, could stop you from getting any job. However, be honest about your past and you should be alright.... |

The mod was pointing that out in the context of the question asked. The mod also wrote that posters should not try to moderate on the board but should address concerns to the mod by clicking on her name or on the Alert button and making a report that way. All that aside, Jailbird makes a good point about the difficulties faced by those with past felony convictions and the importance of voluntary disclosure. The one thing about lawyers, as compared to general business people, is that they have a much better background for understanding that not all felonies are created equal. |

A lot will depend upon the state in which the person lives, as some states regulate paralegals rather tightly and others have no regulation at all. My personal opinion is that as long as the employer is aware of the paralegal's background, it should be a matter of his own discretion when it comes to hiring decisions. We already have too many aspects of our lives being micromanaged by laws and regulations. That said, most attorneys will be far more interested in the applicant's abilities and skills. I've been known to return resumes with corrections all over them and a short cover letter suggesting some improvements, rather than throwing them in the trash. I figure that's better than leaving the poor applicant to wonder why he or she didn't get the job. When our work relies on proper use of the English language, punctuation, spelling and style, a resume that looks like a first draft is a sure-fire way to be passed over. |
