Our office recently hired a law student. He always has his head phone (ipod
) on while working. He says he needs to listen to the music while working.. I wonder how long before he gets fired. Anyone think this is weird?

Well, that's the norm for today's new work force. I don't like at all!!

If it helps him keep on task and keep his mouth shut, I wouldn't have a problem with it.  This assumes, of course, that it's not a violation of firm policy.

I suppose that says a good bit about my experience with summer clerks.

Walking around the office with headphones on tells me, via body langauge, I don't want to socialize. However, as a summer clerk, how are you going to learn anything without talking to the paralegals.

I've helped teach many young summer clerks and first years!!

Do the summer clerks and first years actually listen to the paralegal? With or without headphones....

One of our attorneys listens to his iPod all the time. I also listen to mine a lot, or plug in to AOL radio. since I don't have an office door I can close. It gets pretty loud sometimes (I work with a social bunch of folks), and I need a way to tune everyone out and concentrate. I spend a great deal of time doing legal research and drafting motions, and while I would prefer to be able to close the door, I'll take whatever I can get.

As long as he's churning out the work, I'm not sure why it would be an issue.

It's not weird to do so as an employee who has worked there for sometime, however for a new employee to do so is a little strange!!
